Lech Lecha

IT'S ALL IN THE HAY 5772

On the first passuk of the parsha Lech Lecha the Medrash describes Avraham’s first prophetic encounter with Hashem. Avraham saw a burning castle and he raised the question is it at all possible for such a scenario to occur without an owner in charge who can extinguish the fire? Immediately Hashem appeared to Avraham and told him that He was the sole owner and in charge of the castle.

These words of our Chazal are indeed cryptic and symbolic yet evidently they contain a very deep meaning. I would like to suggest the following interpretation.

The Beginning and the End

In this week’s parsha we have both the beginnings of the Jewish nation and the end during the days of Moshiach. The Torah describes the war that Avraham Avinu fought against the four mighty kings. The Medrash explains that these four nations symbolize the four exiles that the Jewish Nation will have to pass through. Even with all the trails and tribulations, pogroms and persecutions, massacres and crematoriums that we will encounter, behold the future is ours.
