Flags 5771

In this week’s parsha we have the topic of the degalim – flags of each shevet. The Shem Mishmuel explains that the degalim symbolize the special privilege of Am Yisrael that allows them to connect directly with Hashem without the use of intermediaries. What merit made them so virtuous to deserve such an intimacy? The Medrash says that when they were all ready to enjoy the Shechina in the Mishkan, they were told to pick themselves up and leave to the “bleachers” while the “box seats” were to be given to the Leveeim. But wait!

Each group of the four groups of degalim consisted of three shevatim. The leaders of each trio was Reuven Yehudah, Yosef and Dan. The Baal Haturim explains that these four were specifically the leaders because when Yaakov Avinu gave all the shevatim their respective berachos  only with these above did he use the personal term of you and yours. For instance by Reuven Yaakov said   בכורי אתה by Yehudah   .אתה יודוך.
