Rosh Yeshiva

Rav Shmuel has been a Rebbi in Yeshiva Shor Yoshuv for over three decades, during which he has taught and shaped the lives of hundreds of talmidim. He maintains a close relationship with these talmidim long after they have left the friendly confines of the Yeshiva. He is the author of two seforim, Sefer Beshaarei Hamoadim concerning personal preparation for the Yomim Noraim, and Sefer Bishvili Nivra Haolam concerning finding and fulfilling one's personal mission in this world.

In addition to influencing people with his wisdom, Rav Shmuel has used his musical talents to reach the hearts and souls of Jews across the world. He is the Yeshiva’s Baal Tefillah on the Yamim Noraim. His Simchas Torah Hallel attracts hundreds of people from Far Rockaway and surrounding communities. The Friday night “tish” at his home attracts both bachurim and “baalai batim”. He has, to date, produced 18 albums of his own compositions including the “Regesh” Series which contain many of today’s most popular Jewish “nigunim”. Rav Shmuel also shares his special Shabbos experience with communities across the United States and Canada. As a frequent “scholar in residence” at out of town Shabbatons as well as Melava Malkas, he inspires other yeshivos and communities with his moving derashos and kumsitzes.

Rav Shmuel is also the composer of the widespread Shalom Aleichem melody. His well known CDs are distributed under the name "Regesh."

This week we wrote on Baruch Sheamar and it's relationship with the capping of BP's oil spill after 87 days. We talked about how Baruch Sheamar contains 87 words that fell on a note from shamayim. It is the beginning beracha of pesukai dezimrah and it is our affrimation that Hashem creates the world every second.

Our Shulchan Aruch begins with the halacha that a person should wake up like a lion for the service of Hashem. The Remah adds a point by bringing the passuk shivisi Hashem lenegdi tamid that one must always have the vision of Hashem in front of him. I would like to suggest a deep connection between these two thoughts which are extremely relevant during the nine days.

One of the five tragedies that occurred on the `17^th of Tammuz was the breaching of the walls of Yerushalayim. The gemarah in Taanis 28b asks the contradiction that the passuk in Yirmayah relates that the breaching of the walls happened on the 9^th of Tammuz and not the 17^th just the opposite of our Mishna? The gemarah answers the contradiction by stating that the breaching on the 9^th happened during the era of the first Bais Hamikdash while the breach of the walls that is dated on the 17^th occurred during the second Beis Hamikdash.
